One important thing to keep in mind: it’s not only the person who killed the cyclist. It’s probably the system and how it’s designed, too. For example, was the “50kmh” limit just a label, or was it enforced and made intuitive with road turns and speed bumps too?

The “justice” system and how it worked here feels like a crime though, to be honest.

Yes, roads can be designed better. Nonetheless, if you break the law you are totally responsible for the crime.

I wonder if the ruling would change if the car hit another motorist and killed them? What about someone walking?

Why is the person walking. They should be in a car like the rest of us. If you get hit while out for a walk by a car on the wrong side of the road going over the speed limit it’s your fault. (/s cuz some people have that opinion)

Tell me what you guys think of this invention idea. A steel post inside the bike that sticks vertically into the ground if the cyclist is thrown clear above some minimum speed.

“That’s psycho, Explodicle” you say. But consider how it changes incentives. Suddenly, the driver is in far more danger if they hit a cyclist, encouraging drivers to spare lives. Like the propane tank meme, but lighter and less deadly for the cyclist.

They’re going to hurt you in the short term and billions in the long term, and the law is on their side. At a certain point you need to physically defend yourself, or just die.

Do you need to cover your car in anthrax and ebola?

Surely a death caused by shit judgement and (whatever causes you to drive on the wrong side of the road) is literally the maximally dangerous.

They’re setting the bar so high for danger it’s in fucking low earth orbit.

Seams like a classic case of driving while tired. If you had a stressfull night in the hospital you probibly should get a taxi home or wait till there is another grownup to take you home. The bar for lenancy was cooperation with the gardi. Like why she is legally required to be. The bar is in the gutter. This case is just sad all round.
