Was anticipating my first tomato harvest, but the weather decided to have heavy rain daily for about a week or so right before they’re ready, ruining the tomatoes. Better luck next time i guess.

    Such is life in farming.

Next time this happens, you might snip them off with a bit of vine, stick em in a paper bag, and see if they ripen. If not, plenty of uses for green tomatoes too!

Yeah im gonna try it next time, the rain is unexpected(as with all rain in tropical country), and the crack happened just a day or two after the first day of heavy rain.

Yeah, too much water too fast causes them to swell and split. That’s when you’d want to harvest them.

Sorry…same thing happened to me. 20 big healthy tomato plants in full on fruit mode and a bout of rainstorms. Every single tomato split.

Decided I don’t really like gardening after that.

You might try taking a spade and cutting the roots on one side of your plants to prevent too much water uptake. Down side - you might have to water plants until they regrow roots if it turns dry.

If you only have a few plants, and cages around those plants, pop on umbrella over the top. Sounds stupid, but it works. Some people around here just tent with clear plastic tarp if in raised beds and we get summer rain. Super cheap, and very effective.
