  • He doesn’t have a chance in the popular vote. He already lost it once (twice, technically). And with how polarizing he’s become, only the more extreme fringe actors are outright supporting him, and those with real money want a “safe” candidate that allows them to keep grifting behind the scenes without causing such a big ruckus. He’ll lose a lot of big donor support, and people are growing tired of the constant outrage news that he generates.
We’ve seen how he performs a symphony of a clusterfuck in a 4 year term, and not even the GOP itself is jumping right at the idea of embracing another 4 years of that struggle- they’re waffling at the idea, and a lot of the extremist upstarts that got a foothold under Trump now want to knock him out of it so they can have their own moment of glory. But Trump was a one-time shot. He was THE face of “The Big Businessman, doing a Business” that appealed to the older, more bootstrapy kind of crowd that still unfortunately dominates the actively voting public. All the younger extremists are trying to parrot him and can’t quite get away with the same level of “crazy” energy without looking actually crazy, since they don’t have the gold-plated toilet of “American Success” to back them up.

But regardless of that, will every hard-right extremist fight tooth and nail to ensure he still wins, including but not limited to high treason, rushed gerrrymandering, voter intimidation (or outright slaughter) and the active dismantling of every aspect of democracy down to the local voter box level? You bet your ass they’re gonna try here.

  • Jpg at 70% will lose a significant amount of detail. It is a “lossy” format, you cant judt compress data for nothing.

AVIF is significantly more efficient than jpeg, so it loses less image data for higher compression (smaller file sizes).

JXL supports both lossy and lossless compression, and is supposed to be more efficient yet over AVIF. However it’s got proprietary all over it because Google et al. For thst alone I would shy away from JXL and go AVIF.

  • Most distros, at least mainstream ones, will happily install right alongside Windows and give you the option to boot from either Linux or Windows when you start your PC.

Basically, there is a “boot loader” that the motherboard finds on the hard drive when the PC starts up and tells it to load the OS. The bootloader handles getting the OS kernel out of the hard drive and into memory with the correct drivers so the kernel can take over. Windows has its own bootloader that can only boot Windows. Linux also has a boot loader called “GRUB” that can boot multiple operating systems located in different partitions on your hard drive as long as it knows where they are.

You’ll have to first shrink your Windows partition using the Disk Management tool from inside windows so that there is “unused” space on your hard drive not occupied by the Windows file system. Then run your Linux bootable USB and it will take up that space to install Linux. Any normal distro like Ubuntu/Debian/Mint et al. will set up GRUB automatically to recognize both Linus and Windows, and you’ll be off to the races.

However, if you just want to play with Linux before you commit to faffing about in your partition tables, most distros can also run in a “live USB” state where it loads the basics of the OS directly from a USB stick into memory, no installation required. I highly recommend doing this first!

  • With the preface of “cheap”, do not ever buy a laptop under $500. They are simply underspecced by the time they get that low, and will give a bad experience.

I would also recommend something like a Lenovo ThinkPad, they are pretty damn tough. Maybe a ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Intel. Spec it out to 16gb of memory and even the i3 processor will get your job done fine in Linux, while landing in under $650. Plus they have removable M.2 SSD’s that can be changed out for a higher capacity very easily, and much much cheaper than the $300 they charge to kit it with a 1tb drive…

  • IIRC the join page is largely automated and simply scrapes active but “small” instances, other than instances that have been asked to be removed from it due to load issues (such as lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, etc). The devs probably don’t even know its up there. Hopefully this gets their attention.

I’m going to preemptively warn my admins about them and ask for defederation though. Don’t need that shit creeping in.

I was already entertaining the idea of a Lemmy switch after they announced the imminent death of my beloved RiF. Lemmy was mentioned many many times in the 3rd party app threads discussing the api changes.

They went ahead and hastened my transition by permabanning me (and two of my alts) for “report abuse” since I dared to regularly report all the obvious spam bots that filled so many subs. Meh. I could have made more alts but really just didn’t give a fuck at that point. Sure hope Spez’s pedo ass enjoys his already failing IPO.
