201·3 days agoI’m on GrapheneOS too, but I think hardware backdoors are a genuine concern. There’s not much an OS can do to fight a hardware backdoor. So I don’t entirely trust it but it’s better than not trying for privacy. In any case, the risk of hardware backdoors is present on pretty much every device we compute on. There’s not a lot of fully open hardware out there, especially for phones.

Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify Execs Bet People Will Pay for AI-Generated MusicEnglish
13·6 days agoI have been enjoying Qobuz, since quitting Spotify a couple of years ago. Everything’s better quality, they have proper credits and PDF CD booklets, the classical music metadata is much better, it encourages you to listen more deliberately to music you choose, and I don’t feel dirty for funding scumbags.

71·7 days agoOK, but the point still stands if you allow that: It has become impossible to tell managers mesmerised by artificial intelligence that the tools are often not, in fact, helpful.

World News@lemmy.world•As Climate-Fuelled Wildfires Rage, Canadian PM Mark Carney Cuts Emergency Response and Funds Fossil FuelsEnglish
111·7 days agoCarney was voted in because otherwise we would have got Pierre Poilievre, the Nazi-courting, MAGA-wannabe dweeb. It was strategic voting, not enthusiasm for Carney or the Liberals. If we weren’t stuck with first-past-the-post elections we wouldn’t be stuck with a choice between Neoliberal bankers and maple MAGA.

Technology@lemmy.world•Cory Doctorow: The people who tell you ‘AI is changing everything’ are lyingEnglish
171·7 days agoIt’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: if all the corporate leaders believe it will change everything and, in a fit of FOMO, force it into every corner of our lives, then everything will be changed. But not so much because of what AI can do, as because of a mass delusion among the LinkedIn types.

11·8 days agoThe Liberal Party is liberal in the traditional sense:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism
But the Conservative Party probably also qualifies as liberal in this sense.
Some people, particularly many Americans, use the term “liberal” to mean left-wing or progressive. The Liberal Party of Canada is not really liberal in that sense, though they make smallish gestures towards social progressivism when it doesn’t impact capital.

There’s no Labour Party in Canada. Carney leads the Liberal Party.
I was apprehensive about buying a used Pixel to install GrapheneOS on, so I put it off for a year or two. When I finally did it, it was so easy I wished I had done it sooner. It’s a great OS and you’ll probably be surprised how easy it is to set up. Things have really changed since the old days of finding half-baked custom Android images on dodgy file shares through forum sites.

25·9 days agoScientists were warning us of the impacts of global warming for at least a decade
They’ve been warning us with some urgency since at least the 1970s. There were concerns published about it in the late 19th century. By the early 1990s the warnings were loud and clear for everyone to hear.

Technology@lemmy.world•Company Offering Printed Books to Train AI Stops After 404 Media CoverageEnglish
81·13 days agoIn ISBNdb’s now-removed marketing materials, it admitted that getting caught destroying printed books during the scanning process would not be a good look. “The optics problem is real,” ISBNdb’s site said. “‘AI company destroys two million books’ is not a headline that generates sympathy.”
So their solution was to do the evil thing secretly?

Without evidence, the idea that there’s a hidden camera in the exam room is just paranoid speculation. By contrast, this was an actual visible camera in the exam room, and a camera that was obviously the doctor’s own personal device. It makes sense to worry more about the camera you know is real.
