The Holocaust was real, and it’s important to not forget atrocities because as we can see we slip back into them very quickly.

My main issue with HOW the Holocaust lives in the modern western conscious is that it drowns out plenty of other genocides, from the Armenian genocide and the Bengal famine up to more recent ones in Gaza and the Congo. It’s ridiculous to compare genocides as if they can be distilled to a number and compared, but the framing of the Holocaust as worse than the other genocides is so counterproductive to developing the empathy necessary to prevent this kind of thing in the future.

I mean the Holocaust literally happened and Europe and they’re full of racism against romani and recent migrants. People shit on the USA for having a checkered past but at least we know about it. The number of brits who don’t even know about their atrocities in Ireland, their backyard, is nuts. That’s not even counting what happened in their colonies. I agree, superficially they’re similar but Hummus is emulsified in an external fat, the tahini, while peanut butter is emulsified in its own fat.

In my experience, the ones who tell you unprompted that they’re vegan are usually relatively new to the diet and are more likely to be treating it as a short term fad diet than the more dedicated ethical vegans.

I’ve known people 10+ years vegan and they’re super healthy and active. So its really just that the fortifications in the US food system are targeted at non-vegans so you need to be more intentional about your diet as a vegan in the US.

For text classification? They might. There’s a million things they could be using. I’ve definitely seen just throwing ChatGPT at text and asking it to generate a label for tagging and classification, but its much cheaper to use fine tuned Roberta or some other encoder-only model. Both are LLMs using a transformer architecture, just one is more what we’re familiar with the other is more meant for text classification tasks.

ah, missed the voice recordings part, I can see an LLM for annotating those. I meant to emphasise this is separate from the LLM assistant and coding models that are the most visible to consumers right now.

It’s incumbent on the unions and workers to decide if them getting shafted in contract negotiations is disproportionate to how the company is doing as a whole or if it’s just the company actually not being able to afford raises or benefits (is the money really not there or is it getting hoarded by management)

If the company is actually not doing well, then laying off some people and trying to right the ship is preferable to everyone losing their jobs if it goes under. When deciding to strike you’re weighing if it’s because of management greed or the company actually not being able to afford the additional benefits.

As it is currently employees only get the downside when the market is weak, they don’t get the upside. Stocks mitigate that problem.

Fyi, this is probably specialized models doing domain specific analysis, not a generative image or text model. I doubt you could find tune it enough on literature to automagically classify proteins.

I get the issues with image generation and using text generation in scams etc. but as a professional coding tool (not just vibe coding slop) AI can be extremely helpful certain tasks, and this use case, where organizations just don’t have the resources to have a security expert pore through millions of lines of code for bugs, is a net positive.

I think this is a case of “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” we can absolutely still criticize the industry and specific companies for IP, societal, and environmental concerns but lets not turn away a win just because they’re causing harm elsewhere.

I do agree that there is compelling story to be told from the lens of building a revolutionary music career. I think simply making a movie isn’t inherently whitewashing, and there are compelling reasons to make a movie about MJ other than as a PR stunt so I’ll wait and see what comes out.

The issue with climate change isn’t the change, or the magnitude of the change, its the rate of change. Life as a whole will adapt, but its not hyperbolic to talk about civilization altering effects. We already have island nations being buried underwater in decades instead of millenia, this isn’t normal.

Sure, things are going to persevere, humanity probably will persevere, but we also persevered through the black plague, doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have tried to prevent the plague if we had the chance. Climate change is clearly brought about by human activities, and if we want to continue our historical upward trend in quality of life, we need to reduce our CO2 output.

If you’re wondering if you should eat there, the bigger issue is they’re just not very good. Its all reheated food frozen in central kitchens optimized for delivery.
