People on lemmy have a weirdly intense hatred of sports, I’ve noticed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Zuckerberg feared monopoly scrutiny and mulled Instagram split, files showEnglish
51·10 months agoActually, he is correct. The Ma Bell breakup in the 80s is a good example of this. The newer, smaller companies grew much faster than the original.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Every non US market could impose their will, simply by banning imports of products that use, or reference SAE instead of metric.
2·10 months agoThat would be ridiculously difficult to enforce. Also, most manufacturing, American or not, is already done in metric. It would be trivial for companies to swap units. There are many, many better ways to tariff American goods.
there is no direct rail link between the SIR and the New York City Subway system
Staten island is the only part of New York City without subway access.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your line of work and how's the pay like?
21·11 months agoYeah but making average wages doesn’t necessarily mean they’re comfortable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your line of work and how's the pay like?
51·11 months agoThat’s the average salary overall. An average electronics engineer makes $109k a year in the US. and even more in places like California.
At no point in it’s history since it’s creation has it EVER made money.
Actually they did make money in 2018 and 2019 but then the pandemic caused advertisers to cut spending.
That’s their new font. This is the new logo:

(Yes it is almost exactly the same as the old one)

Technology@lemmy.world•Bluesky is booming in Japan — mainly for reasons other than U.S. politicsEnglish
131·1 year agoJack Dorsey still owns BLUESKY, and if anyone is trying to tell you he doesn’t, they’re lying.
But Mr Dorsey is no longer part of the team behind it, having stepped down from the board in May 2024. He deleted his account altogether in September. It is now run and predominantly owned by chief executive Jay Graber as a US public benefit corporation.

Linux@programming.dev•Asahi Linux’s bespoke GPU driver is running Windows games on Apple Silicon Macs
2·1 year agoIt’s not quite as good as gptk. Gptk can run games like cyberpunk at 60+ fps on more powerful Mac’s but Asahi currently can’t run AAA games at 60 fps. Also gptk has support for avx which Fex technically has but doesn’t work on m1 because the chip lacks SVE(2). However I imagine in the future asahi will almost definitely be better.

66·1 year agoThis is actually a google account feature called “auto signin”. If you go to google password manager and click on the settings button in the top right there should be an option called Auto Sign-in you can disable.

Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube Hype gives smaller creators a place to shineEnglish
4·1 year agoNegotiations for what? YouTubers have pretty much no say in how YouTube runs and they make most of their money outside of YouTube (things like merch and sponsorships).

Technology@lemmy.world•OpenAI releases o1, its first model with ‘reasoning’ abilitiesEnglish
9·1 year agoAt the same time, o1 is not as capable as GPT-4o in a lot of areas. It doesn’t do as well on factual knowledge about the world. It also doesn’t have the ability to browse the web or process files and images. Still, the company believes it represents a brand-new class of capabilities. It was named o1 to indicate “resetting the counter back to 1.”
I think it’s more of a proof of concept then a fully functioning model at this point.
