This isn’t an announcement they’re moving to Wayland, Wayland has been the default for years. It’s not irrelevant. If you’re not using Wayland, you’re using X11. Keep up. I don’t think I can dumb this down any further to help you understand.
You should care about issues in X11 because you’ll be facing them if you don’t use Wayland. This isn’t a difficult concept.
