Australia’s 120,000-strong Jewish community has long complained that Albanese hasn’t done enough to protect them from rising antisemitism following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, and that his critical position on Israel has emboldened pro-Palestinian activists to target Jewish institutions. Albanese’s occasional statements of support for the community after the many attacks on Jews in the past two years have frequently been met with cynicism.

Ah FFS Albo is so fucking spineless

I’ll just share a great comment I saw last week on Facebook:

A Royal Commission is for systemic, nationwide failure not a single criminal act like the Bondi Shooting

Australia only uses Royal Commissions when normal oversight has completely failed, causing widespread harm over years not localised to one region, city or state.

    Examples:

    • Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

      • Most expensive ever (~$535 million)
      • Decades of abuse across churches, schools, state institutions
    • Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability

      • ~$300–350 million
      • Widespread abuse and neglect across care, health, justice, NDIS
    • Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety – ~$110–120 million – System found to be unsafe, neglectful, and failing nationally

    • Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme – ~$60 million – An unlawful government scheme that harmed hundreds of thousands

The Bondi attack was a single act of violence by an individual.

    It is already subject to:

    • Police investigation
    • Coroner’s inquest
    • Independent reviews

Unless evidence shows repeated ignored warnings, systemic government failure, or nationwide negligence, a Royal Commission is not justified.

Calling one without proof of systemic failure is political theatre, wastes public money, and retraumatises families.

Facts first. Evidence first. Accountability where it belongs.

I really hope they at least are listening to some sane non-zionist voices and reject the bullshit IHRA definition of antisemitism

But considering our “special envoy against antisemitism” is an open zionist, I don’t have a lot of faith that that will be true

On the other hand, I’ve seen zionists already complaining that the Commissioner for being insufficiently pro-genocide. So maybe there is some cause for hope?

According to polling around 80 to 90% of Australian Jews are Zionists

Yes, Most Jews are in fact Zionists

A survey conducted by the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University, Melbourne in conjunction with the Jewish Communal Appeal in Sydney, Australia in November 2023 of Australian Jews showed

91% felt at least somewhat emotionally attached to Israel with 75% answering ‘very’ emotionally

82% said they personal social connections to Israel through close family members and friends who live

      93% have visited Israel.

I thought that to. I think genevaconvenience has made a logical assumption, that Israel and Zionism are 1 to 1. This might not be correct especially for the individual who may know more or less about the origins of Zionism, and the Israeli State and yet have strong connections there.

For instance, I have strong family connections to NSW but when I go there, the place as a whole feels quite different culturally.

Likewise, I got family connections to the UK but I still think it’s somewhere that needs to be heavily chlorinated

Oh my! I’m not sure how you mean that! 😂

              • Is that a dig at the UK for getting bullied to take chlorinated chicken from the US?

              • A dig at their privatised water shemozzle?

              • An obscure WW1 chlorine gas reference (this ones my over-active imagination for sure! 😂)

              Or,

              • just that its a dirty place that needs more cleaning!

Zionism is the belief there should be a Jewish suprpremacist ethnostate. That is what Israel is.

Anyone who believes Israel should exist is a literally Zionist.

You’ve made an assumption that everybody today has that original view of Israel. Even though it’s historic origins aren’t disputed, its important to veer away from dangerous generalisations like this as much as possible, its what genocides are made of. Stopping ourselves from making generalisations about whole populations means we can always maintain the ability to comprehend the contextual nuances of one another, something I fear too many in Israel itself refuse to apply to Palestinians, but not all.

Take Australia: Australia was a settler colonial penal colony. The world turned and the idea of what it would be then, is not necessarily what it is today. And importantly, its not what lots of Australians now believe about their country. Some people may think its still a settler colonial penal colony. The history certainly shows some peoples such as Aborigines have a more than fair claim to still believe that, but theres others that believe its a US satellite state, and yet others again who believe we are young and free.

My point is, a country is made up of multitudes. No matter what a country’s founding beliefs are, they’re gona change, some will cleave to those beliefs, but others will see their country in a vastly different ways to the founders, and as their lives are lived the face of a nation will change, for better or worse.

So historically yes that was it’s intention, and likely still has many subscribers to that intention. But, we can’t assume that is everybody who believes Israel should exist, or the only reason driving that belief.

There’s going to be acting on this one and it’s all going to be censoring anti genocide protests and brainwashing kids on how awesome Israel is.
