I’m glad it’s been phased out, but I’m horrified anyone ever thought to do that to these precious babies.
I know! I can’t imagine hurting these sky puppies. Not to mention about how important they are to the ecosystem.
We’ve a similar problem here in Sweden where a certain subset of the population wants to shoot our wolves because there have been the occasional wolf attack on livestock. We have like 350~ wolves here.
Germany has about 1600 wolves.
Germany has an area of about 360k square kilometres, Sweden is around 450k square kilometres. Germany has a population of 82 million humans, and we’re like 11 mil here in Sweden.
It baffles me that we “have” to hunt this species to a point where we’ve needed to import wolves to prevent inbreeding, when a much smaller country can handle a much larger population. It makes me so angry.
Especially since protecting from predators just requires having some dogs. It is easily achievable and not very expensive for the services provided. Wolves contribute to the ecosystem and should be allowed to live.
In some cases, just getting fences.
I recall seeing someone complain that their sheep had been hurt, but there were no fences. They were talking about how expensive that was, but there are groups that will help you subsidise them, and get them installed. It feels to me like they just don’t really care about their animals and shouldn’t have them to begin with.
I’m sympathetic to the fact that it is a cost and I agree that it is absolutely worth incurring. It’s kind of crazy that fences are not required in the first place. How are you keeping your animals on your land otherwise? That should be a normal level of responsibility.
Yeah, I agree. The way I see it, the fence would be part of the cost, similar to feed or vet costs. Not having one feels to me like it’s rather neglectful. To then go and blame the wolves… It just doesn’t sit right with me.
