When 0.18 started rolling out, I read that all Lemmy links would become universal, that you only need to start typing and it’ll auto fill a proper link, which will also work on instances where it’s not discovered.
But I’m not seeing anything? When I type !communityname, it still creates just the https link, which kicks you out of your instance. And to make a universal /c/ link, I still need to edit it manually. I’m not seeing autofill for c/ or /c/…
Also, if I do make a /c/ link, it still gives a 404 if your instance hasn’t discovered it yet.
So am I missing something, or did everything stay the same? (Or only on lemmy.world?)
Speaking of which, is it possible to make a universal link for a post?
I was working on a list of health communities and ran out of space. If I could remove half the links and all would still work, that would help. Never mind adding new links.
!lemmy_support@lemmy.ml
(!lemmy_support@lemmy.ml)
should look like this for you:https://lemmy.world/c/lemmy_support@lemmy.ml
I see. So basically the best way to link is to let the autofill do what it does and then delete the https link? (Assuming we’re not typing the whole comm address.)
What if the linked community isn’t discovered by my instance yet? I’ll need to search for it like before?
You should only write:
!lemmy_support@lemmy.ml
nothing more. Then Lemmy will automatically make the link fit your instance’s URL.You can go to any community and the instance will discover it, but posts won’t show up until someone subscribe.

I tested last night and still just got a couldnt_find_community
But still a bit better than before I suppose, so thanks.
What does the actual link look like, that takes you to a community it couldn’t find?
For example https://vlemmy.net/c/starwarstelevision@lemmy.world shows this
I’ve tried on a couple different instances. I was testing on links from my sidebar at !starwarsmemes@lemmy.world which are all in the format you suggested. Communities that are discovered work ok. Btw no difference even if I’m browsing as a logged in user.
https://lemmy.wtf/c/starwarstelevision@lemmy.world
works fine for me via my instance lemmy.wtf and I don’t think anyone from lemmy.wtf is subscribed to it.But it shows content, so somebody probably is/was.
Or maybe the difference is between 0.18 and 0.18.1.
Ok nvm. I’ll try to catch the devs on Matrix. Thanks.
