I don’t think they had anything specific in mind, but they just don’t want to create prominent female figures, be it real people or game characters. They have a long history of suppressing gender equality there.
And surprising. I always thought of China as being quite progressive with women’s and to an extent lgbtq rights as well. It seems to be regressing just like the US.
It’s more like southern US. On LGBT, there’s no government stance (except there can’t be themed establishments apparently), but there’s a lot of conservatives who don’t like it. I forgot how it was with feminism, which is probably around the average of the US.
