Adding sails to cargo ships has been talked about for decades at this point. I wonder what the obstacle is. Added labor costs? Lack of technical expertise or awareness in installing them?
Bunker fuel is too cheap and environmental regulations are not sufficiently enforced on open seas. So the shipping lines will pay a lip service to such kind of ideas and maybe even fund some research into it to hedge against regulators starting to enforce pollution limits, but as long as this isn’t happening…
