You’re completely right on Australia being extremely racist when it wants to be. However the yes vote is a bad example. It was a bad proposal, of major changes, and segregated society further.

It was however a perfect example of Canberra dictating to indigenous people how Canberra will help them without guidance or support from indigenous communities, or addressing the real issues, such as closing the gap.
