  • A modern Pixel phone could probably run the AI models locally but they would likely be more limited and it wouldn’t be particularly battery-friendly.

An old iPod touch wouldn’t be able to so I think it’s safe to assume those functions were happening on Apple’s servers.

In fact I would be confident claiming that no mobile devices are currently running these models locally, whether you are using Google, Apple, or some other photo app.

Like I said, it may be possible for some modern devices with TPU chips to run them locally but that is not happening currently and would probably not be as good as experience if they were

This is exactly why I was motivated to start using Immich instead. Using any of these corporate services you are giving away your privacy for convenience.

  • I’ve been using Linux for a long time on various other systems but what caused me to finally ditch Windows completely on my daily driver was:

A nonconsensual Windows Update which caused my bitlocker encryption to become corrupted and I lost everything on that disk.

This unscheduled reformat combined with all the other shady practices on Windows lately cemented my choice.

It’s been several months now and I couldn’t be happier!

The quality of gaming on Linux has advanced an incredible amount in the last year or so since I’ve tried it. Most of my games will either run natively or require a few extra clicks to use proton in steam. A few outliers that aren’t on steam required Lutris.

On average I find the performance in games is better on Linux, even for non-native games using proton/wine.

Definitely would recommend giving it a shot if you are on the fence. Particularly if you’ve tried gaming in the past and were disappointed.

  • Yes I love it!

I can use the same wall plug or portable battery for my laptop, phone, and soldering iron, and it has a bunch of nice qol features.

There’s an accelerometer built-in so it can detect when you put down/pick up the iron for sleeping the heater and also for orienting the display. The new version also has Bluetooth so you can monitor/control the iron from your phone/PC.

The heating element is in the tip so you are less likely to burn your fingers and it’s also far more efficient so it’s able to heat up very quickly and handle large pads for its size.

It can draw up to 85W through a barrel jack or USB-PD.

I paid $25 for it and have gotten a ton of use out of it.

I put away my expensive soldering iron and use this one exclusively now because it’s just more convenient to use.

I would definitely recommend it for new or experienced users, it’s a great value for the price.
