Same here. There’s actually only 1 reddit community I still go to now, and that’s /r/ROGAlly.

I just don’t like the “police” comparison. There are ways to motivate people to keep order without sending armed state goons to kill or imprison you.

I think weather or not this comparison is good or bad will completely depend on where you’re from. The concept of police is good. It’s how it’s practiced that is either good or bad.

I hear a lot of people talk about how Reddit was full of terrible people. I very rarely saw these people though. Not sure if their voices got down-voted, or maybe I simply stayed away from the communities they gravitated to. Personally I never really browsed Reddit home screen, I just bookmarked the communities I liked and went directly to their pages. So maybe that’s how I missed out on a lot of it.

That said, I did se quite a bit of nonsense when browsing gaming forums. PC gamers hating console gamers, xbox gamers mocking ps gamers and vice-versa. Never did understand peoples need to be superior in the gaming world. These are all just methods of enjoying the same hobby!

I agree. The problem is that many people who come to Lemmy don’t know how it works, and they gravitate to the biggest instances automatically. Heck, it’s what I did when I joined Beehaw. It wasn’t until a few days later that I understood the pro’s of this method. Fortunately, the Beehaw community rules really aligned with me, so I was lucky in that way.

It’s mostly a question of “can we attract enough users for the ecosystem to be workable” and I think the answer is “yes.” Hell, for me it already is.

As long as there’s enough of us to maintain a community here, then we’re golden 🙂. And I’m definitely under the impression that we’re getting there.

I honestly don’t think the fediverse will become nearly as popular as many seem to.think. It’s still complicated to use/understand for many non-tech enthusiasts, and in the case of Reddit, while people are angry, I doubt most of their users are going anywhere any time soon. Some will leave, but it’s not going to be a small number.

We keep going on about how Reddit relies on it’s “creators”, without whom they’ll die. Frankly, a lot of the highest rated content is just repost of old videos or tiktok videos. A lot of that stuff isn’t original, and the deep conversations are, in my opinion, few and far between. Sure there are some communities whi h have this, but they’re not exactly over represented.

Yeah, I felt the same when I read his post on Reddit. He worded things incredibly badly, and even I, when reading his post, got the impression that he wanted 10 million dollars to “make their problem go away”. It almost feels like he was testing the water by being vague about it, before backpedaling when he realized they weren’t into that.

[Edit] I get that he was probably trying to prove the point that their price was ridiculous and Apollo couldn’t be costing them that much, but man. Terrible way to communicate that. You’re not trying to sell your old TV to some guy in a bar here!

To be fair, the original had some pretty disturbing scenes. I still remember the one where a train refused to leave a tunnel. So they bricked him in, left him there, and that was the end of the episode!

Audiobookshelf has come a really long way. The version out now is heaps and bounds better than what it was 1 year ago.

How does this work on Lemmy? Can mods edit users posts?

Although I liked reddit, I didn’t like the focus on karma. Way to many posts were made purely in an attempt to collect karma. Ruins the conversion and litters the feed with re-posts of videos that belong to someone else.

Makes sense. I assume the same applies to communities hosted be said instance. What, however, happens to posts one has made on other communities whos instances are still running? I assume posts made there will still be there, but the usernames will point to dead links?

Is it at all possible to migrate users or communities from one instance to another?

I to thought it wise to pick one with high numbers. It had nothing to do with being afraid of not having people to talk to though, as I understood that we’d all be connected. It was more a fear that an instance with 20 users might get shut down because the owner got bored. In my mind it seems less likely that a popular instance gets shut down.

So what happens to an account if an I stance goes away?
