We do not make up for 50% of the active users. Also we have plenty of moderators and admins, reports get handled pretty fast. It’s up to the community moderators first but if it takes too long one of the admins will step in.
And we will never close registrations.
No this had nothing to do with Hexbear
*allegedly
We are not sure who was behind the ddos. It could have been that guy or it could have been users from exploding-heads.com because we defederated with them.
Or it could just as well have been an admins from another instance that didn’t like LW was the biggest instance.
The only thing that was sure was that they knew very well how Lemmy worked and which actions caused the heaviest load on the server.
We couldn’t handle the ddos at times, the influx was never the problem. Every time that did become a problem we upgraded the hardware.
In a VM you can not really use your GPU so that’s not the way to go about it. So no, you seem uninformed
You know that if your kbin.social account did not give you access to Lemmy content there would not be much left, right? You use kbin to access Lemmy content…
Could you do us a favor and send all info about this to info@lemmy.world? I would like to have a look at what’s going on. This is ridiculous if true.
Thanks!

I’m not addicted it’s just a habit!
But it was true though I quit after 30 years of smoking - just went cold turkey. First few days were a bit rough because you have those moments during the day when you light one up (after eating, leaving work, …), habits.
But it’s been a month so 💪
So because the rules we put on lemmy.world also match with laws - it’s because of the laws we decided to not federate with them? Not because we don’t want to deal with that kind of people in general? Because we personally don’t like bigots, racists and homophobes? And it wasn’t because we didn’t want to give them a platform here? Cool, I didn’t know.
Did you read that post? I don’t think you did because that explains the entire reasoning why it was defederated. Had nothing to do with them breaking the law.
Lemmy.world has rules that are up on https://mastodon.world/about - if posts from other instances do not follow these rules the posts will be deleted and if needed the user will be warned/banned. If there is an entire instance that might be a problem, they might ultimately become defederated. Yes this is the last option, but sometimes it’s also the only option. Mod and admin tools are quite limited currently and there’s just some content we don’t want to be linked with.

Ofcourse. We will come up with an official statement soon and then I will edit my top post to link it but honestly this action was a no-brainer. Unanimous decision from everyone involved.

FidoNet :D
Ok just want to make it clear that we never suspected Hexbear to be involved. This started before we defederated with them.
