the library was run on donations and someone copied all the books and is selling a service that summarizes them on a lot right in front of it. you can still go around and give your donation inside but most people don’t and the library is starting to fall apart. also the summaries kind of suck.

history clearly shows that workers not accepting unbearable conditions ultimately leads to improvement for everyone. guilt-tripping customers into giving alm to employees instead of paying them actual wages is just postponing the inevitable.

this number is so far off that it makes me doubt your whole story…

quick estimate: if we assume your teacher had a rather new car with good fuel economy (6l/100km) and was using only the least polluting fuel (e85 with 15% ethanol that produces some 1.6kg of co2 per liter) we would have to assume it was a really heavy car made entirely out of the stainless steel (1500kg of the most poluting steel that produces over 6kg of co2 per kg of steel, other materials have comparatively small contribution) to come anywhere close… about 10 tons of co2 from car production and from burning the fuel.

from these crazy assumptions you can easily see that most normal vehicles under normal circumstances will produce way more (like order of magnitude more) of co2 by driving than is produced by making them. for example a smaller car made from 600kg of normal steel (1.8kg of co2 per kg of steel) and fuel efficiency of 8l/100km (still very good) will produce more co2 than was produced in its own production after roughly 5000 miles of driving and is just adding after that…

one big city is fine as long as you don’t want to have city where you work separate from the suburbs where you live. this is one completely artificially created expectation that only exist in america due to a century of car lobby and propaganda. if your work, doctor, pub, park and shop are all within 5-15min walk from your home and you can get everywhere else by public transport it’s ok if the city stretches wide and it is actually quite pleasant to live in (ymmv).

that sounds horrible. in the country where i am from even a person who gives you the first aid cannot be possibly prosecuted as long as they give it their best shot at helping you, even if they would end up ultimately harming you (for example they try to stop a bleeding after a car accident and mess up your broken spine when moving you).

i got first permabanned by a mod from r/news for commenting “when a terrorist hides in a school full of children it is not ok to blow up the school with the children still in it” under an article about IDF doing just that while hunting for some hamas fighters (no warning, no previous infractions, straight permaban, reason: “you broke the community rules” - no further explanation). it hurt a bit cause i did not participate in any political discussions normally. but shortly after that there was a picture of WW2 nazi flag on someone’s front yard in ohio and people started suggesting that someone should bring a veteran to this person to explain them the error of their ways. i didn’t resist and responded that this person knows exactly what they are doing and they do it cause there are no consequences to it. i also wrote that somebody should “tar and feather them and chase them around” - after which my account got restricted cause “we are trying to create a community where everyone can feel safe and therefore we cannot tolerate calls for violence against others”.

i have a family. living with a small child in an american city without a car is entirely possible. you lose the ability to go out (either to city or to nature) but with a small child you don’t have time to do that anyway so you might as well pay more to live closer to your job. alternative is paying the difference in rent for a car loan and loosing the time you don’t have while sitting in traffic. big caveat: this works only if you earn enough to be able to afford living close to a city center in the first place. also, it is still way less comfortable than a life in a developed european city.

it’s activitypub thing so lemmy as well. you sign up on one server, subscribe to community on different server, mods of the different server will decide they don’t like your server for any reason (e.g. explicitly because mods of your server didn’t blacklist some other server) and you are out of that community. it sucks. imho something based on the old news system would be better (i.e. community exists independently and servers just subscribe to them or not).

I’m not talking about people I block (I am not exposed enough and don’t suffer enough harassment so I don’t block almost anyone)… I’m talking about about mods of the instancr that hosts people I care about suddenly blocking instance that hosts my account - not because anything we did but because they didn’t like that mods of my instance didn’t block another instance that has some weird (e.g. transfobic) content. I follow a friend and suddenly we are out of contact because some entirely unrelated drama. And that’s how fediverse works by design.

it’s not just not caring. lemmy is currently not a viable alternative for e.g. reddit (there are no active conmunities for any of mine hobbies and posting to any of those that are here doesn’t make sense - there is nobody out here who could respond to a specific question about analog photography or something similar). fediverse as a whole will never reach the momentum of old centralized social media - by design. it turns out that having many small servers with different moderation policies is great for resilience but sucks for bringing people together. i found out recently that my mastodon server is blacklisted on many of mainstream ones not because there is some bad content there but because it federates with some servers that mods somewhere else consider harmful… and so i am missing large swats of content from those.

i was driven by an uber driver yesterday who seriously thought cycling should be illegal.

his rationale was that bicycles are “unregistered vehicles and so if they cause accident who is going to pay?!” when i pointed out that probably they should pay just as anyone else he just dismissed it like this: “that is not possible. if a cyclist crashes into me and kills me who is gonna pay me?!” i was speechless after that.

nice metaphore to how people use the social media nowdays… they spill their mind into a public discussion forum and then they are pissed at the “reply guy problem” and try to come up with ways to stop people from talking instead of adjusting their expectations… i get it - everyone wants to be treated nicely but come on!

i mean each of the individual programs that can load your keepass keyring is a password manager.

the keyring itself isn’t a password manager and the main reason why i use it is because each of the individual programs that i actually use to open it (keepassxc on windows, keepassdroid on my phone, keeweb hosted on my vps on other devices…) can use the same file with the same specification that is shared everywhere.

i’m not bound to any particular program with a particular set of features. just use anything that can open that file format from a place where i choose to host it.
