For the curious:
spoiler
Every human is a little bit sad all the time because they know they will die, but that knowledge is what gives life meaning

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Are there any websites or channels that post before and after photos of roads taken from motorist and given to public transit/bikes/etc?English
1·10 days agoI only see them scattered everywhere. It might be a niche that still needs to be fulfilled
I know a bunch related to architecture or then and now for specific cities, but I have never seen one focused only on the transition you mentioned
I’m quite curious to know if there is any out there

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent. At a billion-device scale the climate costs are insane.English
15·12 days agoThe article actually gives 3 options:
The only ways to make the deletion stick are to disable Chrome’s AI features through chrome://flags or enterprise policy tooling that home users do not generally have, or to uninstall Chrome entirely
- It can probably be reverted at their whim at any time
- You probably don’t have access to it
- It is the most realistic option, just use another non chromium browser

6·29 days agoBut the other stuff is nasty. Total of petrochemicals in a tyre is above 60%. That fabric, carbon black, oils, elastometers, textiles, antioxidantes and additives are all based on petroleum too

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think there's too much emphasis in popular media on working your ass off?
1·30 days agoThat was a great watch. If anyone else has any other movie/series recommendations like Perfect Days (2023), let me know

5·1 month agoWe just came back from the poop walk, poop was made, so I’d say fine
Yes, klinkers aren’t laid directly on the ground, it usually has a layer of sloped gravel and another layer of sand/fine gravel compacted with a vibrating plate, which prevents water pooling between and beneath them in the first place

8·1 month agoThis comment actually got me curious, so I found these numbers for cities with population around ~1.1 to ~1.4mi
Can you guess which cities are actively investing in their vision zero programs and reforms?
Lemmy doesnt like tables, so I’m sorry in advance:
Numbers normalized to 100,000 population
Deaths per 100k City Country Source 0 Helsinki FIN 1 0.36 Oslo NOR 2 3.70 Amsterdam NLD 3 4.20 Porto PRT 4 4.38 Adelaide AUS 5 4.59 Chihuahua MEX 6 8.64 Florianopolis BRA 7 9.39 Mendoza ARG 8 14.15 Valparaiso CHL 9 16.01 Jacksonville USA 10 I was going to try go get 5 cities per continent, but I ran out of time. I think we already can get a good picture.
Population taken from 2025 numbers https://worldpopulationreview.com/cities which says it sources from https://esa.un.org/unpd/wup/ (currently down for maintenance). It was not ideal to use 2025 numbers, but differences would be minimal based on annual growth
Latest source data available was used, which is around 2022-2025. There are PDF links, open with caution
Has there been any other games around here before?

20·2 months agoFrom the top of my head, there are:
City of Amsterdam https://social.amsterdam.nl/
Baden-Württemberg https://bawü.social/
Netherlands https://social.overheid.nl/
Germany https://social.bund.de/
France https://social.numerique.gouv.fr/
EU Commission https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/Switzerland had a pilot project, but I don’t know what happened to it
I’m pretty sure there are more local governments with their own instances or plans to do it , specially after all the digital sovereignty discourse got some boost to it
We’ll need another post to know more about those fruit trees as well

I think there is a small mistake in your numbers, please correct me if I misunderstood: 5km trip is £0.375, roundtrip £0.75, which totals £3.75/week
edit: The numbers will jump up quickly when you start comparing the numbers when those maintenance windows start to hit for the car vs bike
