Install Ubuntu and be done. I’m able to print to my brother network printer with no special drivers. I installed a gnome tweaks package to do some minor tweaks in gnome, and I did rip out the Firefox snap thing to install Firefox from a package so I could use my kpxc plugin, but that’s the only major change I made. Hell, Dell (laptop) even provides firmware updates via the package manager so your bios gets updated properly. Best Linux desktop experience I’ve ever had over the past 5 years and I’ve been daily driving Ubuntu since 2004.

Just checked my own sshd configs and I don’t use CBC in them. I’ve based the kex/cipher/Mac configs off of cipherlist.eu and the mozilla docs current standards. Guess it pays to never use default configs for sshd if it’s ever exposed to the Internet.

Edit: I read it wrong. It’s chacha20 OR CBC. I rely heavily on the former with none of the latter.

Facebook has groups, and unfortunately, that’s a pretty important feature. The car groups I belong to are hardcore track drivers and DIYers that share knowledge (problems and resolutions, alignment specs, tire and wheel experiences, custom parts, parts swaps, etc) and independent manufacturers who make stuff that isn’t otherwise easily available.

Until there is a solid replacement for that, I can’t get rid of Facebook proper.

Adding a hardware key, like Nitrokey, would be an additional level of safety there. I would not use the database without some kind of additional key (something you know and something you physically have).

There isn’t really privacy in email unless all recipients are encrypting the email body itself. Email leaks a lot of metadata even with GPG use, and it’s typically stored at rest in plain text.

There are tweaks you can do that will accept the unencrypted email, then immediately encrypt the message with your key so only you can read it. Then it would be safer at rest, but less convenient. It really depends on your threat model.

Well, yeah. Private network sysadmins tend to act like a big hammer. Torrents can be terrible on a network, particularly Linux distro torrents, especially if the hardware itself was put together on a shoestring budget. That said, a lot of universities are mirrors and there isn’t really a need to go outside the university network to obtain that stuff. Not all the time, though.
