Are these indoors or outdoors?

I have a feeling this is the approach I’ll be taking, I just need to set up a separate area for them before they go outside for the first time.

I’m less concerned about mice and more concerned about for example flies and other winged insects landing on my tomato plants during the few hours that they’re outside, laying eggs, making themselves at home, and then spreading to my other indoor plants when I bring the tomatoes that aren’t fully hardened off yet back indoors, potentially causing an infestation among my indoor plants. I feel like I am being overly paranoid, but I hope this helps clarify the scenario that I’m asking about.

Thanks for chiming in, although I think we’ve got our wires crossed. I’m asking about protecting my indoor environment from plants that have been outside for an hour or two during the hardening off phase in the spring, before transplanting them into the ground. I agree about washing stuff before bringing it inside at the end of summer, that is a good idea.

I love the idea of Pixelfed and briefly checked it out a couple years ago, bounced off it b/c hash tags weren’t federated, and other issues that I don’t remember the specifics of. For example, when I click on #cats in a photo caption, I want it to show me photos across all instances w/ that hash tag, like the “All” feed in Lemmy.

I don’t wanna poo poo on something that is essentially a free service for plebs like myself, but I remember things being just broken/ incomplete enough and it seemed like its original creator had already moved on to other projects that I filed it under “things w/ potential that aren’t quite there yet (and may never get there).”

As a n00b I got transparent pots so I can monitor moisture and root development, but this isn’t the first time I’ve been warned about roots not liking light, so I’ll look into this further. For what it’s worth, in my setup the bottom halves of my cups receive very little light anyway b/c the tray (not pictured) covers the bottom halves.

Would you mind posting close-ups / in-depth on your compost bin and rain barrels? I’m really curious to see what they look like and how you support them - looks like you have them on some sort of crate or other support system. I’m trying to work out where and how to set up composting and rain water collection in my limited space - I have a small yard (~400 sqft) w/ a small deck (~400 sqft). Seeing how you’ve done it might inspire me. I’m super jealous, thank you for sharing!

I see your point. In the case of the YT video I linked in the OP, the tester considered variety of crops as a factor, but perhaps you’re right that those particular crops do not represent a diverse enough set of “pickiness” among seeds. Toward the end of her video, she does acknowledge that what makes sense for her may not make sense for all of her viewers growing different crops in different climates, and she encourages her viewers to run their own tests.
