The nation’s two most populous states — California and Texas — grappled for political advantage in advance of 2026 elections that could reorder the balance of power in Washington and threaten President Donald Trump’s agenda at the midpoint of his second term.
…with a redrawn congressional map sought by Trump to shore up Republicans’ 2026 midterm prospects…
Use the word: gerrymander.
Absolutely, they should call it what it is instead of sugar coating it.
Thought this might be interesting for some:
The term dates to 1812, when Massachusetts Gov. Elbridge Gerry signed a bill redrawing state Senate districts to benefit the Democratic-Republican Party. Some thought an oddly shaped district looked like a salamander. A newspaper illustration dubbed it “The Gerry-mander” — a term that later came to describe any district drawn for political advantage.
I love it–thanks for sharing.
Hey media, California isn’t ‘jousting’ for advantage. California is only posturing as a defense against Texas’ un-democratic aggression.
Fun fact, California and NY could gerrymander a supermajority all on their own.
And at this point I hope they do, as it’s honestly the most rational course of action under the current conditions.
I don’t see how that is possible when the total number of NY+CA districts is only 78.
