Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

I do feel sorry for individual Americans who will lose their jobs, maybe their homes, maybe more. However, we saw what Russia has done to the Ukraine and we have to be just as wary about our Southern neighbour. We’ve always known that America is a good-weather friend and we can’t count on them, even if they have always been able to count on us, but with Trump we have to believe that America would go even further and try to destroy us. We can’t sit back and take that. Until Trump and his acolytes are out of power in the US - and that may never happen - we have to Stand On Guard for Thee (Canada). That means as little US vacation and as limited buying of US merchandise as we can individually manage.

Sorry, but your federal government snatches people off the streets and sends them to concentration camps. We know of at least one Canadian citizen that was kidnapped by ICE, who then died in their custody.

This is in addition to your president threatening to annex us, and starting a trade war for no discernible reason.

No, I will not be visiting. A regime change won’t help either.

It will never go back to the way things were, and that’s on you collectively.

That’s going to be generational trauma. Trust will have to be built with the youth, as adults have already said no.

Ending this regime is meaningless if the machinery that enabled it remains intact. The ICE agents that are lustily performing their duties will still live there, and will absolutely vote for more of the same.

There’s a segment of the population that still won’t get off their asses to vote as though their way of life depended on it.

Passage of time alone, is woefully inadequate to repair what was vandalized.

She’s Democrat, so not really LAMF. I feel sorry for relatively sane people getting caught up in all this. Fuck the whole MAGA madhouse with a rusty spade.

That said, I just don’t see what she thought she could have achieved with that. Maybe its target audience was her own consituency more than actual Canadians.

Yeah I looked up her Wikipedia:

Shelley Berkley (née Rochelle Levine; born January 20, 1951) is an American businesswoman, politician and attorney who has served as mayor of Las Vegas since 2024.A member of the Democratic Party, she was a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Nevada’s 1st congressional district for six terms from 1999 until 2013.

She also ran for Senate as a Democrat and lost. So not really a LAMF situation in my opinion.

But then again, I suppose in World War 2, most people viewed all Germans as Nazis.

My thinking, LAMF is mostly for people who brought it on yourself. Nevada voters are a pretty mixed bag, though not as much in the city.

Having spent time in the international district of LV, though, they’re lovely people mostly trying to get by. They all cater to The Strip but it’s a regular ol’ city just like the rest of them.

I’ll stay in my genetically diverse country of Canada and if I feel like it, I’ll visit any one of the many casinos we have here and keep my money in the greatest nation on earth.

I like people of colour, ethnic origins and choice of religion or lack there of, and honestly, I enjoy feeling safe amongst my brethren and not worrying if myself or my neighbour will be pulled out of their bed because they were born the wrong skin tone or race and sent off to a desolate jail in another country not of their own.

America the fascist can rot and I’m enjoying watching it start to implode.

I feel sorry for the good Americans caught up in this, but you have a line item in your constitution to fight this sort of thing. It’s up to you all to choose what you do with that.

You shouldn’t. Its implosion will have a negative impact all over the world. Far-right extremists are gaining power everywhere, including in Canada.

Of course neither of us can know for sure, but I personally believe that Trump/MAGA utterly failing will have a takedown effect on all those far-right parties that are very much copying its playbook.

I’m not so sure. The rest of the world is working as fast as it can to extracate itself from any depedence on the US. Here in Canada, we are actively finding new markets for our products and so is the rest of the world.

By the time that the US does implode, nobody will care, and hardly anyone outside the US will notice.
