I’m looking for the ultimate mug. Here’s my requirements
-
thermal, for keeping water cold or for hot soup/tea/coffee
-
easy to wash by hand
-
has a handle
-
Doesn’t spill or leak when thrown about a bit
-
Has an easily removable top
-
Holds a decent amount of liquid
I’m a big fan of Zojirushi’s mugs. You’ll need a bottle brush to clean, but I think all their gaskets are removable and replaceable. I’ve never had a problem with leaks and they have a solid sliding lock.
You might want to clarify “decent amount”.
These guys make a range of oversize mugs.

That holds 52 fluid ounces (or ~1.5 liters). I use a smaller version.
I have that one, and can vouch for it. Its my perfered travel mug for my morning coffee. The only downside is that it isn’t a screw on lid.

That’s a lotta coffee.
If you don’t drink decaf or do really dilute coffee or something, you might want to consider how much caffeine you’re intaking, if you’re kicking each day off with a full mug of that.
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/how-much-caffeine-in-coffee#amount-by-type
A 12-ounce (oz) cup of brewed coffee may contain 113 to 247 milligrams (mg) of caffeine
At 52 fluid ounces, that’d be 490 mg to 1070 mg of caffeine if you fill it up.
Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day seems safe for most adults.
EDIT: For comparison, a can of Coke has 34mg, so if it’s at the higher end there of 1070 mg, that’d be like drinking 32 cans of Coke.
I’m also a big fan of the smaller bubba mug that I have (https://www.amazon.com/Bubba-Stainless-Steel-Travel-Handle/dp/B00XMH7MRW/). It’s cheap, sturdy, and easy to clean.
Check out Kleen Kanteen. 100% recycled steel, some of the best thermal performance out there, and easy to clean (unlike my big Stanley with the flip top)
Project farm does good ratings.
I didn’t see it, but honestly, Thermos is the OG (as far as I know) and still make really good quality gear. Expensive, they don’t skimp:
40oz monster(I like this cus the top doubles as a cup): https://thermos.com/collections/beverage-bottles/products/icon-beverage-bottle-40oz
24 oz: https://thermos.com/collections/beverage-bottles/products/icon-water-bottle-with-screw-top-24oz
They also do little food jars with the same styling if you want a little more open of a mouth for soup.
I have two of these contigo snapseal tumblers and they work great. The lid really helps it stay sealed well. https://www.contigo.ca/mugs/contigo-superior-2.0-stainless-steel-vacuum-insulated-travel-mug-20-oz-591-ml/SAP_2094865.html
Stanley has always made a good thermos. They make travel mugs of various types as well. Should be available in the UK.
Personally I’m currently using a Pilot travel mug. It’s just a cheap plastic travel mug from one of the bigger truck stop chains here in the US.
Literally every person recommending a different mug. Guess I just don’t add into the confusion with my recommendation. Buy what ever you like. They all do pretty much the same thing.
This is on sale at morningsave (one of meh’s side channels) right now:

2x 40oz vacuum insulated tumblers for $20, not bad. These deals usually stay available for a few days after going up. Shipping is free for members which is $6/month iirc. I order enough stuff for the membership to be worth it. It covers morningsave, meh.com, sidedeal.com and casemates.com (wine site that I don’t use).
Hydroflask has been my go-to for stuff like that, and I believe they’re the only (or one of very few) major company that doesn’t use lead solder in the manufacturing process.
I know they’re kind of a fad, but I genuinely love my Owala. The built in straw means an extra couple things to clean, but it does a pretty good job keeping things insulated and I’ve never had it leak.
