A New Jersey high school announced a socialist club for students amid conservative fears for the rise of socialism across the country

‘Workers of the world, unite!’ read the poster advertising the new club at Highland Park High School.

The club claimed to offer students an opportunity to learn about socialism and ‘ways to solve social problems that don’t involve exploiting the working class.’

The flyer used a picture of German philosopher Karl Marx with the words ‘we want you to help us build a better world.’

The club held their first meeting on December 4. Students were also promised an opportunity to ‘learn media literacy skills along the way.’

Recent studies show that socialism is rising in popularity among young people.

A survey done by the Cato Institute suggested that 62 percent of people aged 18 to 29 have a positive view of socialism.

What would have an effect in your opinion? What else could students do in a school? Having a place to learn and teach about new perspectives on how society can be structured is very beneficial, I would say

I mean zero effect on the overall situation. We aren’t “about to get better.” Chances are when Trump starts rounding up “terrorists” as part of ICE, they will round up the socialists.

So you prefer to remain silent and learn nothing?

This way if America actually manages to survive the Trump era we might have a new generation that has a chance to avoid making the same mistakes over again.

That is not what I prefer.

I’d tell you what I think should happen, but you’d probably just tu quoque me and that would end the conversation. 🤷‍♂️

I’m probably not too far away from them–I’ll see if i can track them down and tell them not to bother. Someone on the Internet said their plan is a waste of time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They might do it for the cute part though, i suppose. Kids these days!

Meh, they will disband once ICE comes for the “terrorists” to meet quotas

I mean depends on execution but giving members even a cursory view of socialist literature and ideas would make it a worthwhile affair. This is the sort of thing that would have real teeth if widely implemented.

I don’t disagree it would be good…. But given the state of the country, it’s probably going to be an ICE target. This would be like starting a Communist club during McCarthyism.
