I’m not so sure the US was a proper ally of Europe (there has long been overt talk in the US about Europe as a competitor and a lot of effort from US sources to try and weaken the EU with for example funding campaigning for Brexit) but I do believe it was an ally of Ukraine.
It was an ally before the Trump came.
