This is probably “old man yells at cloud” territory, but this is a weird trend. I don’t know if I could ever take a film seriously when the credits show the director as “Markiplier” or “Jack’s Septic Eye” or whatever else nonsense screenname a youtuber chose when they were 14.

I understand the marketing of it all, but use your real fucking name. You’re not just making youtube videos here, you’re presumably employing hundreds of people to make what is supposed to be a professional product. It’s just cringe, I dunno.

I got this really cool book about fake video games, and it’s presented very well. But there’s just something about “by Super Eyepatch Wolf” in fancy writing that makes me cringe every time I see it. Like dude, you’re an adult. Stop.

Music artists do that all the time, common to have alter ego. Not sure if this is that much different.

Shit, my boy Marshall Mathers has several alter egos. Slim Shady and Eminem being the best known ones, but he also went by Evil when he did Bad meets Evil with Royce da 5’9" (Bad) (Oh look, that guy also has two alter egos because his last name sure as hell isn’t 5’9" and actually his first name isn’t even Royce)

And hey, Eminem won an Oscar for a movie where he was literally credited as Eminem, not Marshall Bruce Mathers III.

I don’t know shit about Markiplier, haven’t seen a single one of his videos, haven’t really watched any let’s plays since about the time SeaNanners played Minecraft. In fact, I had to go to Wikipedia to find out that Markiplier got famous doing let’s plays. But I HAVE seen the name Markiplier several times, so clearly his name is very big and it would be stupid as hell not to use it.

I agree with you, i wish that for particular endeavours people would use fullnames rather than stagenames. If it’s something you’ve created entirely yourself - your own album for instance, or a youtube channel - use your stagename.

Cinema is like theatre, which is like writing; use your full names, people!

To answer another commenter’s auestion, yes, it annoys me if a moview credits actors as “zendaya” or “rihanna” rather than their full name. This is just ridiculous to do outside of pop music or hip-hop. See it wouldn’t be appropriate even for various other genres of music.

I was a bit irked that the video game Dispatch had actors credited as

I guess another reason it irks me is that acting is a personal thing. It works for music because you put on a persona and there are no “credits” at the end of the song; the name helps carry the persona and hence the whole performance. It works less for acting because in the credits we want to know who is behind such a brilliant assumption of a persona. I think the same goes for directing: we want to know the very name of the genius whk poured his creative efforts into the film.

Do you get upset when bands or artists use the name of their group instead of their real names when promoting stuff? If not, please try to explain how that’s different.

Is Markiplier putting “Markiplier” in the credits, or are you getting twisted at headlines that are OFC going to use the name he’s most known by and not written by him anyways?

He has a very marketable name. No one would know who Mark Fishbach is. Most people don’t know who Martin or Charlie Esteves are. And they’re kind of widely famous.

It’s part and parcel of the marketing. You would have never heard of the movie otherwise. Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies are odd stage names, and yet the Damned are still one of my favorite bands.

They’re the less famous family members of Emilio Estevez, right? I think I’ve seen them somewhere, but the exact source seems quite Illusive, man. Honestly, I think calling them famous is putting a bit of a sheen on the whole thing. They sure think they’re real hot shots, but between the three of them, they have about two and a half men worth of acting chops.

Are you trying to use Charlie Sheen’s birth name to imply people don’t know who he is!?

People know who Charlie sheen is. But people aren’t all that familiar with the esteves family. Sheen, basically shiny is a silly name. But it’s his brand and what the world knows him as.

I also learned that Martin Sheen is a stage name, I didn’t realize he was the Estevez patriarch I figured Emilio had beef.

Because as far as I know only one “Estevez” is famous. However, I think most people would probably recognize Martin Sheen by name as well, although I suppose that is showing my age some.

However, this is the most pointless argument I have had this far down a comment tree is a long time. Thanks for that.

It is for a lot of people. Who ironically would not have ever heard of him if he hadn’t used his screen name. And that’s no crime. He was marketing first and foremost to his audience which you aren’t in. And that’s okay. But it was also smart on his part.

I may be getting old enough to be in old man yells at cloud territory. But honestly hating on someone for a screen name etc is kind of. It’s like, cmon man. Get with the sexagenarian kids on this. There was a guy named after a loaf of meat for gods sake. Anyone remember Simply Red? Is Pink still relevant? Iggy Pop, Jonny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Ziggy Stardust? Grand Master Flash, Run DMC, Salt and Peppa, Kid and Play, Hammer? Were Lux Interior or Poison-ivy Rorschach weird stage names? If that makes their music bad, I think I’d rather stay sick. It’s all about branding. If it works it isn’t stupid.

I’d heard of him, but never seen a video, didn’t even know what he looked like until about 5 minutes ago when I looked him up on Wikipedia.

But he has 38.6 million subscribers on YouTube so there are millions of people who do know him by that name. I think it would be stupid not to capitalize on that fame.

I’d still recommend watching it regardless of you’re thoughts on that. None of his youtube persona appears in the film, and it’s genuinely an incredible scifi horror movie on it’s own. The fact that it was made by such a small independent team just makes it even more impressive.

Lol, ok so I had to figure this out. In brief, no, Markiplier hasn’t abused any pets afaik.

Recently though, Taylor Nicole Dean showed her pet snake Tofu apparently ‘holding a grudge’ against Markiplier. She has apparently been credibly accused of mistreating her pets resulting in some of their deaths. I didn’t bother finding out the details.

But the latter story is probably where the wires got crossed, the more you know or something I guess 🤷🏼
