Derp! Thanks!!
It’s scale.
Scale is the enemy of social networks. All of them, including Lemmy.
Let’s say 0.1% of the population are just straight up assholes who ruin everything.
If you only got 100 people on a site, no one is an asshole.
1000 people? Well now you got that asshole Andy in the group. Fucking Andy. But we can deal with him.
But we scale up to 1,000,000? Well now you got 1000 fucking assholes to deal with!
love following you on mastodon and you’ve been a great part of discovery!
why tho? why is that the name of the platform then?
but like… why tho?
so it’s a “gun rifle”? why in the world would they name a platform after it?
Great. Now we gotta Google what a Karabin Gun is.
we do! Check out #BlackMastodon and any of the queer and trans hashtags. And definitely follow Lisa Melton, she’s the reblog queen and you’ll discover tons of people through her posts and reblogs @lisamelton@mastodon.social
follow more people, yo. You GOTS to follow liberally, click more diverse hashtags and follow them too! My feed is super gay, very POC, and a blast!
As an active person on both (and a mod here), Mastodon is definitely the most active. Yes, you have to follow liberally, dive into reblogs and follow some more, also cruising the Explore/trending section helps but it doesn’t take long to build up a super fun feed. People engage alot, no algorithms, it’s all just live and great.
Lemmy “elegance” isn’t that elegant. I’ve had to work with admins to help break through issues of posts federating around, but it’s getting better. I’m finally getting things going pretty smooth and my community is getting momentum, !AlternativeNation@lemmy.world but it’s been a very slow, buggy, and painful process. One thing that helped was posting to my Lemmy community exclusively through my Mastodon account for a while to help bring people over.
Search is a wash. Mastodon, I can put a link to a post in the search and it pops up, can’t do that here. But Lemmy has better search for just text.
You see? Both are nowhere near perfect, both are flawed, and both are great! They serve very different purposes and don’t compete. They complement each other. I’m super happy we have both and absolutely love building up this community supported DIY fediverse.
Exciting times ahead!
Mastodon is more active but Lemmy is super fun and growing.
Mastodon keeps getting big injections of new users because Musk is a stupid man baby and keeps pushing users away.
Lemmy, post Reddit protests, is now dependent on word of mouth.
Fast. It’s staying asleep that’s the hard part.
Board games.
Yep.
Not sure why people struggle with this. On Reddit you have aww, but you can also have awww, awwww, aww1, awwpets, awwwpet, and so on.
People tend to pick the bigger ones some go for niche ones, whatever.
Personally, I’m happy with both. Lemmy and Mastodon are far from perfect and both feel sorta beta, though Mastodon is further along.
Search is weak on both platforms, imo, but I expect it will improve eventually.
You mention favorite counts only being your instance, but same is true for community subscribers here.
Also landing on other instances from outside links can be confusing to find the same content in your instance (Mastodon and Lemmy).
Federation does make things more complicated. But it beats centralization.
In the end, it comes down to your personal end use and preferences.
Personally, I like Mastodon for conversations and I like Lemmy for community building - I mod !alternativenation@lemmy.world - and that works for me. 💕
(Though I’d kill for some consistent performance from Lemmy after trying to comment 3 times)
yeah, they’ll need to fix a lot of their permissions if they want to get into the EU - which is probably a much higher concern than some piddly mastodon users.
I think they were ever only going to do it if Threads failed.
Yeah. Morning math got me stupid. lol. Edited!
