Win for Rebecca Slaughter as court rules commissioners may not be dismissed by a president without cause

A divided US appeals court on Tuesday allowed the US federal trade commissioner, Rebecca Slaughter, a Democrat, to resume her role at the agency, as Donald Trump tries to remove her from office.

In a 2-1 decision, the District of Columbia circuit court of appeals allowed a lower court decision in favor of Slaughter to take effect, rejecting the Trump administration’s request to delay the ruling during its appeal.

The court said that FTC commissioners may not be fired by a president without cause, saying that the law on this point had been clear for nearly a century.

You’re too kind to the Republican Party. “Family values” was always code for misogyny, homophobia and intolerance. “Fiscal responsibility” was always about cutting services to the most needy while indulging the corruption of the wealthy and powerful, and it privileged whites. Indeed there was no real fiscal responsibility: Republicans ran up the national debt every time while Democrats brought it down. Republican racism has been a thing for a long time, and white supremacists have never been unwelcome in the party. The authoritarian Christian impulse was always hovering around waiting for its moment, and corrupt evangelicals always had close relations with the GOP. Pedophilia isn’t new but just newly known about.

The Republican Party was consciously working its way towards MAGA for decades. And MAGA is all the same people. All that has happened is they have been given license to come out in the open with their real intentions, and they’ve dropped the noble-sounding goals, which were mostly dogwhistles and euphemisms anyway.

I’ve heard this described as the Republicans being two “Santas”. Democrats used to be shoehorned as “tax and spend liberals”. So, one “Santa”, because you get better social programs but you also have to pay taxes for them…Republicans started handing out tax breaks while still spending the same or more money on all of their defense contracting, military industrial complex and pork barrel bullshit as well…becoming two “Santas” where you still get all of your kickbacks from daddy government, but you also get tax decreases.
