Wait, after all those murders and sabotaging during the elections the people still managed to elect a really worthy president (seems like the best president I’ve seen in all the countries the last years)??
Wow, maybe I should move to Mexico
Congratulations Mexico!
Edit: Well, hmm:
Either that or back deals with the cartels to ensure the same happened to the opposition, or not to the official candidate
Legitimate question: Who exactly is it that won’t attend her inauguration? Were they invited, but refused to attend? Who else from the US is going?
Also, congrats to Mexico! sounds like a great choice for a president!
Yeah, I’d be interested in how many people go to the inauguration of other countries heads of state.
Like, my best guess is that it’s a dig at, like, Gov Abbott, but I agree that I don’t think I’d expect him to, even if he was a Democrat.
When was the last time Mexico attended a US Presidential Inauguration lol
Spiderman pointing at Spiderman
Also, is it normal for them to attend, or are we just making this great Mexico news about America?
Guessing it is common for the state department to send a representative. Perhaps the Secretary of State since it’s an important neighbour. Since it’s campaign time, you could see others going if they believe it helps their reelection bid somehow ( though I don’t know how), but it would not be unusual if only the US ambassador to Mexico is present. I don’t know of any foreign politician that attend the US presidential inauguration.
I mean you have to assume they’re talking about like the governor of Texas or something, but I’ve never heard of them attending before.
I will NOT be attending, so I’m on the list. I can’t go, but I won’t be going, either, as I neither have an invitation nor the means to do so.
Yeah I’m confused as to why that sentence was in the announcement.
Is this the first Nobel laureate to run a country? How bloody amazing. Well done Mexico!
Barak Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate nine months after his inauguration. Subsequently, he used a drone to murder an American citizen, among a litany of other atrocities.
Meanwhile Lê Đức Thọ refused the prize as it was shared with FUCKING KISSINGER.
Best thing Obama did was pulling out of Iraq, finally leaving an illegal war, so hats off for that. But all his talk about envisioning a world free of nuclear weapons and then not even attempting disarmament of the US ones kinda seems weak.
Kudos to Obama for actually following through, but the withdrawal from Iraq had a deadline set by the U.S. Status of Forces Agreement signed by Bush, per the request of the Iraqi government.
I think his attempts to reestablish new diplomacy with Cuba and Iran were good.
Then Trump fucked it all up and Biden doesn’t seem to give a shit about going back.
Putin didn’t want to even talk about a new START and unilateral disarmament is irresponsible.
He got that prize mainly for not being George W. Bush if I remember 2009 correctly.
Wasn’t Carter a Nobel recipient too?
Yes, but that was in 2002, long after his term in office.
We actually bombed the moon on the day of the Nobel Prize announcement!
Seriously though, it was a middle finger to Bush more than anything.
Lots of Peace winners, but Winston Churchill had one in literature:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heads_of_state_and_government_Nobel_laureates#In_office
Churchill was a master of historical non-fiction. Not “history books,” per se, but basically books about historical topics pertaining to England that interested him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_History_of_the_English-Speaking_Peoples. They were very popular during his day.
Oh yes, I’d forgotten about Winnie. I have a lot more respect for science and literature prizes than the peace prize though. Harder work, I reckon.
Nobel Laureate is a bit of an overstatement but she was part of an organization that won the Nobel Prize, similar to how Amnesty International has won it a few times:
She was a contributing author to the 2007 IPCC report, maybe not a huge deal (there were 100+ authors) but it is reasonably relevant. Here is a chapter that she contributed to (I don’t know if there is more than one) and her earlier work is cited.
My first thoughts,
U.S.A.: Can we have that president?
U.S. Govt.: No, you have president at home
Biden
But seriously this is awesome to see, It’s nice to see some uplifting news.
I had the impression that people running for office in Mexico were being assassinated a lot, if she is real force for good then I hope she’s safe
That happened in small cities and some hot states. They’d never dare to attack directly a Presidential Candidate.
Why? Are they afraid UN peace keeping forces would be deployed or that the US would step in?
The last time Mexican Cartels pissed the USA off, the largest cartel in Mexican History got shafted. So yeah, they are pretty afraid of direct US involvement.
And by shafted, they mean the opposite cartel got armed by the “Fast and Furious” operation
I mean, you win some, you lose some. Nwver said they were effective.
Which one? When? Curiously asking.
Maybe they were talking about the Gulf Cartel?

edit ok I was wrong here, I understand what people disagreeing with me are saying
The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.
I am not attacking you, I understand the knee jerk reaction, I am just pointing this out because I think it is true. I also don’t question that you are genuine in your concern, that isn’t what I mean.
To everyone else on this thread, especially if you are white/European or from the US and are white please don’t joke about the President of Mexico getting assassinated given the history with Mexico and the US (and by extension Europe). It isn’t funny, even when you are being sarcastic.
Just be happy for Mexico.
I might be wrong but I don’t think the commenter was joking. It’s not a joke to say a lot of politicians have been assassinated and to question how someone in such a situation managed to get safely elected. I wonder the same thing.
I understand but I literally just left Nogales to visit my stepfather and during my week there there were so many campaign ads. The only thing he told me about them is that candidates from all positions from Mayor to Governor and up wind up dead all the time.
Apparently it’s really common and my father had a similar reaction to the top comment. Yes it’s scary but it’s something that the government needs to take precautions for
The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.
What should be and what are, are frequently two different things. In this case, political candidates shouldn’t be commonly murdered, but that’s a reality for them and one they should be planning for.
And it’s not a knee jerk reaction, it’s just a legitimate worry posted by someone who pays attention to the news. I’m sad to say that I both had the ‘hell yeah’ reaction right before thinking ‘I hope her security can keep her safe’ thoughts back to back.

Wasn’t that mostly for local offices likes amyors and such?

How the hell did Mexico get a Jewish president before the USA? We need to step up our game.
But also good on her and on Mexico. She sounds exactly like the sort of person I’d want running my country.
they also approved gay marriage and socialized medicine before we did & do
they also had gay marriage … before we did
The US legalized gay marriage nationwide in 2015; Mexico didn’t achieve the same until 2022.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage (Timeline section)
It’s interesting how ahead their government is with some things and behind it is with others (generally speaking they have a lot of crime in their larger cities).
It’s harder to take out crime when the organized crime is outfitted with similar gear to the army and the army is highly corrupt due to the cartel paying better.
America was fortunate that we were able to snuff out our organized crime before they had access to modern technology that made it near impossible to snuff out their movement.
It’s hard to arrest a group of cartel all at once if they never leave their heavily guarded fortresses for Sunday brunch like the mafia did
Don’t disagree, it’s just fascinating to see it all play out.
Another issue is that they’re civilians. You could bomb their facilities but bombing civilians, especially when they’re your own citizens, is a pretty bad look.
To an extent yes, but you’ll have a hard time finding many reasonable people to protest bombing military grade cartel facilities. Many innocent civilians have suffered at the cartels hands and governments the world over are familiar with the extent of the cartels crimes, I don’t think it’d be a significant problem.
You know what they say about eggs and omelets after all
Same-sex marriage by two weeks (12 and 26 of June, 2015), so not exactly much.
how long on the socialized medicine?
Considering it hasn’t happened in the US yet…
“X years, Y months, Z days and 1 second”
“X years, Y months, Z days and 2 seconds”
“X years, Y months, Z days and 3 seconds”
“X years, Y months, Z days and 4 seconds”
“X years, Y months, Z days and 5 seconds”
“X years, Y months, Z days and 6 seconds”
…
Wish it was shorter, health care here is stupid. :(
This is not true.
More misinformation, eh? Really going all in with it, huh?
Marriage for same-sex couples nationwide was legalized by the Supreme Court of both countries: Mexico in August 2010, and the United States in June 2015.
As for socialized medicine, Mexico clearly has it, and the United States clearly does not.
A person with good ideas that leaves their religion at the door would be swell right now. Religion only divides us into smaller, scarier groups. (See: Christian nationalism, women’s rights, the middle east, etc.)
That said, it is a damn shame Bernie didn’t have a fair chance.
How the hell did Mexico get a Jewish president before the USA?
there just aren’t that many places as racist as the good ol USA man.
You have a self-declared zionist in office now.
Mexico City had the world’s largest population of Jewish folks before Israel was created, iirc.
Huh, I definitely would’ve guessed it was New York City. I suppose I was mistaken about the ethnoreligious diversity of my neighboring country
We got close once. Unless you want to count Netanyahu
Not at all surprising to me. America is deeply reactionary. Made worse by the fact that our electoral system gives disproportionate representation to rural areas.
She has Jewish ancestry, but she’s said she does not practice religion.
Hell, how did Mexico get a female president before the USA wtf? Even South Korea did (okay that one sucked but it’s still baffling regarding the US)
United Sates of Israel
In October 1991, Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari went to Stanford University to give a talk on the benefits of Latin American neoliberalism, but was met with a demonstration against it. The angry college girl holding the sign with the inscription “Fair Trade and Democracy Now” in English is the current president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum
And the picture from 1991 is in black and white?
GTFO
Edit: seems I was wrong in my assumptions
It’s obviously scanned from a newspaper. Not everything is a conspiracy…
Edit: Found another picture:
They still had newspapers in the 90s. And some pictures you can only find on old newspaper micro film. So they’re in black and white. Even color printed newspapers would catalog their back issues in black and white.
color printed newspapers would catalog their back issues in black and white
Why? It’s not expensive to set one copy aside and keep 365 of them a year into some cold dry storage, right?
The archives aren’t newspapers, they are pictures of the newspapers on film that’s ment to be read from the film and not developed.
Man, you must’ve thought a whole 2 seconds about that comment.
Yep
Not everyone bought their first 5MP digital camera on the same day.
Almost everyone was shooting on film in 1991, as digital cameras were usualy NTSC resolution or 1024p and very expensive. And B/W film was always cheaper than color but both were quite affordable by the 1990s.
Why the hell can’t we have candidates this awesome on the ballot here in the US?! 😿
You have Bernie Sanders, AOC
Yeah but they’re basically relegated to side show characters by their party.
Fair point
Sheinbaum is better than those two, but not as much as you think. Her mayorship and her party have good relations with Israel, cooperated with the US in violence against migrants, and silenced protestors.
Yes, and I voted for Bernie when he ran and I would absolutely vote for AOC if/when she does run. Just… the choices in this election cycle are wanna-be, half-demented dictator-for-life vs a “moderate” Democrat who, while he’s gotten a surprising amount done, isn’t exactly renowned for pushing the corporations hard on climate change.
Honestly, the stuff he’s gotten done over his career has been life changing for me. I hate that I have to give him credit for legalizing cannabis, but here we are.
You don’t like deciding which person who will be the oldest president we’ve ever had for president is interesting?
Yeah, it’s a pretty frustrating time to be leaning left. And given the chaos Trump would unleash, it’s not like there is any choice at all about whether or not to vote for Biden… 😿
bc mexico is actually democratic with significant proportional representation and not the weird arse shit merica calls “democracy”?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_in_Mexico#Current_Elected_Federal_Offices
Yeah 37 assassinated candidate runner ups being murdered speaks volumes about that
They were not all runner-ups, you’re falling for misinformation bullshit (and stop upvoting misinformation, people!). The assassinations were not presidential candidates. They were local politicians, running for mayoral or council seats.
Which is absolutely fucking horrifying in and of itself, don’t get me wrong, but what you’re saying is just not true.
Hmm… so it’s not the electoral system that needs reform… Murcia just needs to murder more candidates?!
Yeah, kinda wondering why the cartels want her in office. Maybe she’s less good than she appears.
Also wondering why anyone would want to lead Mexico given that angering the cartels will get you cartel’d…
I’ll tell you what I told the previous commenter: They were not all runner-ups, that’s misinformation. The assassinations were not presidential candidates. They were local politicians, running for mayoral or council seats.
Which is also disgusting, of course, but no, the cartels did not kill off all her competition to get her into office.
Maybe they don’t want her in the office, maybe they didn’t want the other guys they offed

She sounds promising, good luck to Mexicans for the next electoral period.
And now I’m jealous of Mexico.

President Sheinbaum.
Not “President Claudia”.
Now the GOP is really hating Mexico.
And below retirement age, too! Finally someone who won’t just want to secure a cozy last few few years for their elderly rich friends.
Her republikkklown neighbors are petty, petulant children. I hope she does well.
Which US politicians typically attend the inauguration of the Mexican President? I’m genuinely curious, it’s not something I’ve ever paid attention to and which US politicians attend it isn’t usually something that gets news coverage here.
Mike Pence was at the one in 2018.
republikkklown
Grow up, please, lol.
More leaders like her please, looking at you US
Edit but yeah being technically capable aside, many eugenists were PhDs and philosophers. Sam Harris comes to mind as he is a racist and a sophist with lots of academic qualifications. So yeah, ethics and morals also matter greatly. Mexico seems to have lucked out, good for them!
Morena is a staunchly anti-liberal party, they’d never have a chance in the US.
Id love for Bernie to get a real chance
